Marillenkirtag or crazy about apricots
Join the crowds at a traditional country fair in Wachau.
In addition to its reputation as a world class wine-growing region, Wachau has also established a reputation for its lavish orchards facing the mighty Danube. Foremost the Marille, as apricots are called in Austrian dialect, are lovingly culivated. At the peak of the harvesting season in the middle of July the Marille is celebrated in the provincial town of Spitz.
The next Wachauer Marillenkirtag, as the apricot fair of Spitz is formally called, will be held from 16 to 18 July. The Kirtag dates back more than 50 years and attracts hundreds of visitors looking for freshly picked apricots as well as for homemade products like jam, schnaps or compote to take with them. But you can also enjoy savory dumplings, cakes or strudels filled with Marille on the spot. A large parade on Sunday lead by King Marillus and Princess Aprikosia displays countless traditional costumes accompanied by sounds of folklore. And authentic folk music dominates the scene during those three days of celebration.
A fair for a special fruit
The Marille from the Wachau area should never be called apricot! The name Wachauer Marille even enjoys EU protection. Thanks to the distinctive climate of the Danube valley with lots of sun but also cold nights in spring the Marille has a very unique taste revered by even the most spoilt gourmets.
